Hawaii Electric Light Co. is hosting an Arbor Day tree giveaway from 9 a.m.-noon, or while supplies last, Saturday, Dec. 13, at its Hilo office. The event was postponed last month because of the unavailability of plants.
Trees to be given away this year include ‘ohi‘a, koa, puhala, lama, niu, kou and kukui.
The annual event is a partnership with Kua ‘O Ka La Public Charter School, Ho‘oulu Lahui, Kaulunani Urban and Community Forestry Program and HELCO.
Kua ‘O Ka La students raised the trees and compiled a newsletter to distribute with them. Information about how to properly plant, site and care for the tree also is distributed. Students and instructors will be available to educate the public about how to care for their trees and explain the cultural significance of the native plants.
